Two coins, one message: Ariane 6 embodies Europe’s technological independence and industrial strength. This summer, Germany and Switzerland are each issuing a national collector coin featuring the European launcher, helping to cement Ariane 6’s place in the European public consciousness. It is also now available as a postage stamp.
This summer, Ariane 6 will make its way into wallets and collectors’ albums with the release of two new commemorative coins: one in Germany and the other in Switzerland. For ArianeGroup, prime contractor for the Ariane 6 launch vehicle on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA), the initiative carries particular significance.
On 10 September, Germany will issue the Ariane 6 collector coin, with a face value of €5. It is the first in a new series of five collector coins dedicated to space exploration, to be released between 2026 and 2028. What makes this coin particularly special is that it was designed in collaboration with ArianeGroup. Following a call for designs launched by the Federal Office of Administration (BVA), which oversees Germany’s collector coin programme, a panel of judges that included representatives from ArianeGroup selected the winning design.
And the result is striking: the winning design features a stylised representation of the launcher’s different configurations, set against the backdrop of our blue planet. Orbital trajectories link the various elements of the design, creating a dynamic sense of movement throughout the composition. The name “Ariane 6” is incorporated into one of these orbital paths, while the colouring of the Earth draws the eye to the launcher’s upper section.
The coin is available in two finishes: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and Proof (PRF). Although intended primarily for collectors, it is also legal tender and may be used for everyday payments.
“Brilliant Uncirculated” is the standard finish for newly minted coins, with a uniformly lustrous appearance. The Ariane 6 Brilliant Uncirculated coin will be available at its face value of €5.
“Proof” is the highest-quality finish, distinguished by frosted relief set against a mirror-like background to enhance the design’s finest details. This version will retail for €16.95.
The Swiss Confederation has also chosen to honour the European launcher – and, more specifically, its contribution to European access to space – by issuing a silver collector coin bearing the ESA logo.
The reverse features the upper section of Ariane 6 and its payload fairing, developed and manufactured by the Swiss company Beyond Gravity. The obverse depicts the Earth, Moon and Mars, framed by ESA’s motto: “Elevating the future of Europe.”
The coin will be issued in a limited mintage of just 8,000 Brilliant Uncirculated pieces, priced at CHF 65 each, and 3,500 Proof pieces, priced at CHF 110 each.
